Project 491 supports Queensland families experiencing financial hardship while trying to access gender-affirming healthcare for trans and gender diverse young people under 18.

Eligibility requirements can change as funding levels and community needs change, so we recommend checking the Project 491 page for the latest information.

Applying is straightforward, and we’ll support you through the process if you need help.

A parent, guardian, or carer completes the application form with information about themselves and the young person requiring care. The young person’s treating doctor will also need to complete part of the application and provide information about the care being sought and how financial hardship is affecting access to treatment. The Project 491 application form requires information from both the guardian and the treating doctor before it can be assessed.

Once everything is completed, simply email the application and supporting documentation to [email protected]. All applications are treated confidentially and reviewed by experienced healthcare professionals appointed by AusPATH.

Approved applicants may be reimbursed for eligible healthcare-related expenses.

In most cases, families are asked to submit:

  • Invoices
  • Receipts
  • Proof of payment

Reimbursements are processed after review and approval. Time frames can vary depending on application volume and funding availability.

Every donation helps.

Project 491 exists because of the generosity of people who believe that financial hardship should never be a barrier to accessing gender-affirming healthcare. Donations help us support more families and respond to growing demand for assistance.

Whether it’s a one-off contribution or an ongoing donation, every dollar makes a difference.

Absolutely.

We love working with organisations, workplaces, conferences, community groups, and fundraising events that want to support Project 491. Depending on your needs, we may be able to provide a dedicated fundraising link so donations from your campaign can be tracked separately.

If you’re planning a fundraiser, charity event, workplace giving initiative, or community campaign, we’d love to hear from you.

Registrations for DCoPs are advertised through our website, newsletters, and member communications.

Simply register for the sessions that are relevant to your area of interest or practice. DCoPs are designed to be welcoming, practical, and focused on peer learning and professional connection.

Where appropriate, AusPATH may make session resources available to participants or members.

Availability depends on presenter permissions, copyright considerations, and the nature of the material presented.

AusPATH offers a growing range of learning opportunities, including:

  • Digital Communities of Practice
  • Webinars
  • Educational presentations
  • Research seminars
  • Conference activities
  • Collaborative learning initiatives

Opportunities are advertised through member communications and the website.

No, AusPATH is developing clinician peer-support pathways to help practitioners build confidence in gender-affirming care.

These connections are intended to provide collegial discussion and professional support rather than formal supervision or patient management.

AusPATH doesn’t generally promote research projects, surveys, or recruitment requests on behalf of external organisations or non-members.

However, AusPATH members are welcome to share relevant research projects, studies, and collaboration opportunities with other members through the communication channels available as part of their membership.

If you’re unsure whether your project is suitable to share, feel free to get in touch and we’ll help point you in the right direction.

AusPATH is not a healthcare provider and cannot provide medical advice or treatment directly.

However, we may be able to help you find information about gender-affirming healthcare services and providers through our Provider Directory.

If you’re unsure where to start, contacting a supportive GP is often a good first step.

No.

AusPATH is a professional association and cannot provide referral letters, WPATH reports, support letters, diagnoses, prescriptions, or clinical assessments.

These documents must be completed by appropriately qualified healthcare professionals who are involved in your care.

WPATH reports, surgical support letters, and other assessments required for gender-affirming surgery are completed by appropriately qualified healthcare professionals who have experience working with trans and gender diverse people.

Depending on the requirements of the surgeon, procedure, and individual circumstances, this may include:

  • Clinical Psychologists
  • Psychiatrists
  • General Practitioners (GPs)
  • Endocrinologists
  • Sexual health physicians
  • Other suitably qualified medical or mental health professionals involved in your care

While several healthcare professionals may be able to provide supporting documentation, Clinical Psychologists and Psychiatrists are generally the most widely recognised and accepted providers of WPATH assessments and surgical support letters, particularly for surgeries where a formal mental health assessment is required.

Requirements can vary considerably between surgeons and procedures, so it is always a good idea to check with your treating team and intended surgeon before arranging an assessment.

As a professional association, AusPATH does not provide WPATH reports, surgical support letters, diagnoses, or clinical assessments directly.

If you are looking for a clinician who may be able to assist, we recommend searching the AusPATH Provider Directory or speaking with your current healthcare team.

AusPATH’s only direct financial assistance program is Project 491, which currently provides support to eligible Queensland families facing financial hardship while accessing gender-affirming healthcare for trans and gender diverse young people.

Unfortunately, AusPATH is not otherwise able to provide individual financial assistance, grants, emergency funding, housing support, legal assistance, or healthcare subsidies.

AusPATH advocates for improved healthcare access, policy reform, education, and evidence-based care at a systemic level.

However, we are generally unable to provide individual advocacy, legal representation, assistance with complaints, employment matters, housing issues, Centrelink matters, school disputes, or healthcare disputes involving individual cases.

If you need individual advocacy support, we recommend contacting a supportive GP as a good first step.

If you’re looking for support, please know that you’re not alone.

While AusPATH is not a counselling, crisis, advocacy, family violense, or healthcare service, there are a number of organisations that can provide immediate support, information, and assistance.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 000.

The following National TGD organisations have substantial lists of helplines and support.

Transcend Australia

Transcend Australia provides support, information, education, and connection for families of trans, gender diverse, and non-binary young people.

Zoe Belle Gender Collective

ZBGC is a trans and gender diverse led organisation that provides advocacy, community programs, training, education, and resources to support trans and gender diverse people, their families, and the organisations that work with them.

Absolutely.

While we may not always be able to provide the assistance you’re seeking directly, we’re happy to help point you towards appropriate services, resources, or information whenever possible.

AusPATH has traditionally relied on the expertise, experience, and generosity of its members, who volunteer their time across many areas of the organisation. This includes committees, working groups, education initiatives, policy development, advocacy, events, and special projects.

If you’re an AusPATH member and would like to contribute your skills, knowledge, or experience, we’d love to hear from you.

Not everyone has time to join a committee, and that’s okay.

Alongside our committees, AusPATH offers smaller project-based opportunities that allow people to contribute in ways that fit their interests, expertise, and availability.

If there’s an area you’re passionate about, get in touch and let us know. We’ll help you find a way to get involved.

Yes.

We’re seeing increasing interest from TGD community members, parents, carers, allies, and supporters who would like to contribute to AusPATH’s work.

While some volunteer opportunities are limited to members, there are often projects, consultations, events, fundraising activities, and other initiatives where community involvement is invaluable.

If you’d like to contribute, we’d love to hear a little about yourself, your interests, and how you’d like to be involved.

There are lots of ways to support the work of AusPATH.

Some people choose to make a financial contribution, while others support us through fundraising events, workplace giving initiatives, community activities, volunteering, or by helping spread awareness of our work.

Every contribution helps us continue supporting trans and gender diverse people, healthcare professionals, families, researchers, and communities across Australia.

When making a donation, you can choose whether you would like to support Project 491 specifically or AusPATH’s broader work.

Project 491 donations are used specifically to support trans and gender diverse young people and their families who are experiencing financial hardship while accessing gender-affirming healthcare.

General AusPATH donations support the wider work of the organisation, including professional development, education, advocacy, community initiatives, resources, events, research activities, and future programs that align with AusPATH’s purpose.

Both forms of support are incredibly valuable. Your choice simply helps determine which areas of AusPATH’s work your donation will contribute towards.

Absolutely.

We love working with organisations, workplaces, conferences, community groups, sporting clubs, schools, Pride events, and fundraising initiatives that want to support either Project 491 or AusPATH’s broader work.

If you’re planning a fundraiser or community event, we may be able to provide a dedicated fundraising link so that donations from your campaign can be tracked separately. This can be a great option for conferences, workplace giving programs, community fundraisers, and special events.

If you’d like to discuss an idea, we’d love to hear from you.

Yes.

AusPATH welcomes conversations with organisations, businesses, professional bodies, community groups, conference organisers, and philanthropic organisations that share our commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of trans and gender diverse people.

Partnerships may take many forms, including sponsorship, fundraising collaborations, event support, in-kind contributions, education initiatives, or support for specific projects and programs.

Corporate sponsors and partners play an important role in helping AusPATH deliver education, professional development, advocacy, and community initiatives. Many sponsors choose to engage with our community through AusPATH’s biennial conferences, where their support is prominently recognised and showcased to delegates from across Australia and internationally.

We carefully consider potential partnerships to ensure they align with AusPATH’s values, purpose, and commitment to the communities we serve.

If your organisation is interested in partnering with AusPATH or supporting a specific initiative, we’d love to start a conversation.

Yes.

Leaving a gift to AusPATH in your Will is a meaningful way to help ensure future generations of trans and gender diverse people, their families, and the professionals who support them continue to benefit from improved healthcare, education, advocacy, and community initiatives.

A bequest can support either AusPATH’s broader work or, if you prefer, a specific program such as Project 491. We recommend discussing your wishes with your legal adviser to ensure your intentions are clearly reflected.

If you are considering leaving a bequest and would like to discuss options confidentially, we’d be happy to speak with you.
